The Powerfest 94 competition was an attempt at Nintendo to replicate the success of the Nintendo World Championship held in 1990. For whatever reason, this competition never reached the notoriety of the original competition. Perhaps it is because they did not distribute the competition carts, giving a certain mystique over Nintendo fans that the NWC did. Or perhaps it was because of the competition of the Genesis at the time that sort of dried up the hype that Nintendo produced when it was the only player during the 8-bit era. Regardless, very little of the Powerfest 94 competition was known except for an article on an obscure website written several years ago. That page gives an excellent account of the competition from someone who competed at it.

Back in mid 2006, jollyrancher acquired the Powerfest 94 cart (as well as the Campus Challenge cart and uncovered this long forgotten gem. The odd shape of the cart was used for Campus Challenge cart, as well as the PlayStation CD ROM prototype. The cart is a bit of a monster, containing several eproms (one for each game, as well as the front-end) and a DSP chip (for Mario Kart). According to d4s, each ROM chip was loaded separately into the snes when it was accessed, and the score data kept on the ram. There are 8 Dip switches that work to change the amount of time you get to play the cart.

There are three games included in the competition cart. In the first section, you played level 1-1 of Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels. In the second section, you play the first track of the Mushroom Cup in Super Mario Kart. The final part was the home run derby in Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball. Much like the NWC, the most points were made in the final game, so finishing the first two games as quickly as possible was key to victory. In the Powerfest competition, the home runs counted for 10,000 points at in the regionals, but in the finals, the value was upped to 1 million points. It is interesting to note that the Dip switches do not change the score you get in Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball, so there perhaps were different versions of the competition cart. The score in Mario Kart is based on how you place in the race, and how many coins you collect. In the competition, you were given 6 minutes to score as many points as possible.

To qualify for the Powerfest tournament, you had to get a high score on the Powerfest cart during Nintendo sponsored events throughout the United States. Regional qualifying events went from May to November. At the events, there were four systems set up, and whoever won on each go got a hat. The top qualifier for each event got a trip to San Diego to participate at the championships. The runner up got a Starfox jacket (presumably) left over from the Starfox Super Weekend Competition.

The M.A.C.S. were designed by the Military to train soldiers in bootcamp back when the Super Nintendo was in its heyday. The gun was essentially a real M16 (actually a Jäger AP 74 - a M16A2 clone), only stripped down and modified to work with a specially designed game cartridge. The gun itself is far more accurate than the Super Scope and has an authentic weight and feel. It still has sights for aiming, and the light sensor is within the barrel.

Players/soldiers would have had to be about seven feet back from a 13 inch TV, simulating real life distance . As for the game itself, it consists of nine levels and aims to help a soldier with their postioning, aiming, and breathing skills.

The carts are generic American SNES carts, with a sticker giving the simulator title and version number. There are three differnt versions of the cartridges, and it's been suggested that there are roughly 600 of each produced.

The program was developed by Sculptured Software and can't be played with a regulal controller, but one needs to be hooked into port two so you can access some parts of the program.

Given the military use, I can't imagine many of these made it out into the civilian world. We had a bunch of these hit the market a few years ago as one person got their hands on a several, but there's still only a handful that have popped up for sale.

The last cart sold for over $600 and the gun for over $1000.

The Super StarFox Weekend was a contest run by Nintendo to promote the release of StarFox. The competition occurred at approximately 1500 to 2000 locations in the US. Extra carts were sold off by Blockbuster and Nintendo Power and according to an article included in the original packaging, the production number was around 2,000.

The seller is actually byuu, creator of the SNES emulator bsnes. He aqquired the set in his quest to make sure each game was emulated perfectly in bsnes, and has personally dumped each rom as well.

Surprisingly, he didn't go cart only and the entire set is boxed, with around 85% complete with manual.

Anyway, you may have already heard about the Super Nintendo SNES Campus Challenge listed on GameGavel.

In 1992 Nintendo created another nationwide contest after the success of the 1990 NWC and the 1991 NCC. This was the first official competition cart made for the Super Nintendo. The event traveled to around 35 different college campuses where thousands of students battled for a chance to compete for the next Nintendo World Championships title. To compete, gamers had to grab 50 coins in Super Mario World, finish two laps on the first track in F-Zero, and reach the highest score they could in Pilotwings, all before time ran out. At the event all three games were combined into a sspecial cartridge made specifically for the 1992 SNCC. Almost all of these cartridges were destroyed.
