I'd guess from the Engrish and the "Mallet Legend" name that this one is either a Taiwanese version made for export or some kind of pre-production sample made before they'd finalised the packaging (since it apparently came straight from the factory). Either way, it's the first time I've seen any version of this thing for sale anywhere. It was after the heyday of Sega Genesis, too, and a low price too boot. I'm kicking myself now. The box calls mine Smash Controller and doesn't mention anything having to do with this game. The pics of the game on the back of the box do look like Whac-A-Critter though.
