Well, you may get your chance soon. Those wacky folks over at NintendoAge are organizing a group buy to have the owner of said proto cart dump and distribute the rom.
Never heard of the game?
Soon after the release of Punch-Out!!, Beam Software began developing an official sequel starring Mike Tyson with manager Don King. Originally titled Mike Tyson’s Intergalactic Power Punch, the game was supposed to take the series into outer space where Tyson would participate in an intergalactic boxing tournament against various space aliens.
The game's production ran into immediate trouble, however, following Tyson's incarceration for the rape of Desiree Washington. Beam changed the Tyson character's name to Mark Tyler and modified King but did little to change Tyler's in-game character sprite.
Nintendo saw the game and disliked it, refusing to publish it due to lack of quality. Eventually, American Softworks Corp. published the title, and the game was released on the NES as Power Punch II, despite the fact that there never was a first Power Punch title.
Here's an exert from the group buy thread:
OK guys I am sure most of you have seen the thread DreamTR started about his protos. What I am wondering is do you guys as a community want to try and get this game released via ROMs. He is asking $2000 for it to release the ROMs. So how many people would be willing to pony up at least 20 bucks to get this game released for us all to enjoy. People would be encourage to donate at least 20, more if you can spare it to get the game released for the community. Keep in mind that all this $20 gets you is a copy of the ROMs playable via emulator only, and NOT a actually game cartridge. (I am sure a certain silly rabbit named bunnboy would have a physical cart release of it though if this happens). If there is enough interest then we will pursue the project, if non one seems to care then the game will remain unreleased.
Also as an added bonus to hopefully get more people involved. Anyone who donates at least $20 bucks will get a sexy boxing glove icon by their name for all eternity! These icons will only exist for people who donate, and will only happen if we can generate anywhere near 2k./ As some of you know, this game is quite similar to PowerPunch II which is already released on the NES. MTIPP has several different image and sprites, and a different title screen of course (seen below). The game play itself is close to the same. I don't think Dream has played to far into the game to see how much stuff is actually different though. I think this is an important piece of NIntendo history and I for one would LOVE to see it get released.
Please post and LMK if you are interested in donating to the project in this thread, and for how much. Please don't say you will donate 100, and then actually only send 20. And if you don't care about the game at least you can get a new sweet icon that most people aren't going to have, lol ~~NGD
Personally, I don't find it as interesting as say, a game that never saw release in any form, but I threw in $20.00 to help the eager folks out. The owner actually reduced the price to $1500.00 and as of posting, they're only a couple hundred short.

DTR must love when people just throw money at him. He’s either had a change of heart (considering that MTPP2 is the proto he said he’d never let go) or being out of the industry is choking his collecting budget and he needs to “sell” some things. I’d go with the former, but of course, being able to charge literally whatever value he wants to assign to it can’t hurt either. Capitalism! Well, good luck squeezing it out… he can’t have much undumped stuff left at this point.
I think its a little more of strike while the iron’s hot. Wait another few years, the NES/SNES repo scene won’t matter anymore and people will have moved on to the next phase of games. This lets him keep the game, get what he feels its worth, and then the community gets the game.
@D
Just because you have an undumped proto does not mean that you have to release them. At least the community knows that at least there is a copy in existance with an announcement akin to the ones DreamTR does, on top of the normal brag posts that many of us do when it comes to our personal collections. It’s no different.

@Limbo: Yeah, seriously. We got Power Punch II already and some different text and sprites for $1500+ is a tough pill to swallow. Everyone donating is essentially paying for a curiosity to be unleashed instead of a new game to try. To each his own. I have an old proto list of DTR’s; I should dig it out and see just what’s not out there.

What can i say: nintendoage is a place where stupid nintendo nes lovers get ripped of there cash.
Nintendo-Age is a cool website and a majority of the people there are cool (myself included)
I remember hearing the story of Power Punch II to be Nintendo’s sequel of sorts to Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!, but I have a hard time believing they canned it solely because of Mike Tyson’s actions.
A more believable story would be the president of Nintendo (Japan) playing the beta and saying “wow, this is complete garbage and would ruin the Nintendo name forever!” Albeit in Japanese it would probably sound a lot more dramatic.
This does not feel or look anything like a true Nintendo game of that time.
D: If you put thousands of dollars into acquiring something, not to mention the vast amount of time and effort put into finding it, would you just turn around and give it all away for free? There is this huge misnomer that DreamTR is very wealthy and hoards everything he gets his hands on just to spite the rest of us; when in fact, if you do some research, you’ll see he has released a ton of info and unreleased games throughout the years.

Why the debate and the name calling? If you want in then donate if not then don’t. This isn’t abortion or stem cell research. LOL
Personally, I don’t play ANY emulated games (don’t even own an emulator) and have no interest in this so I won’t but some people love NES so much that they want it ALL. Hey more power to them.

DTR isn’t rich, he’s just very smart. He has an impressive ability to buy low (or get free) and sell very high. He rode the first wave for many things that netted him high profits and made the most possible out of his job in the industry.
I’d imagine if he invested a little time and money into the stock market, he would indeed become rich.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought he got these for free, but if he has invested a lot of time or money in it, then it all makes sense.

I’m sure he has quite a number of interesting titles that still haven’t been dumped. I can think of quite a few I’d rather see than this title though.
I don’t understand though, why would he announce to people that he has all these undumped protos but not release them? What good does that do?
I like this website
