Sonic Crackers Proto

Written by Link on 18th October, 2008

From the auction:

sonic crackers proto sega genesisThis auction is for my Sonic Crackers proto cart for the Sega Genesis! Sonic Crackers is probably the best known unreleased game of all time. A quick search on Google will turn up a number of webpages and information on the game although there is no really explanation as to where it came from and what exactly it was supposed to become. The basic consensus seems to be that this was an early engine test for the game that become known as Knuckles Chaotix for the 32X. I personally know of three other carts that are in collector's hands but no one is really sure just how many carts are actually out there. The cart works perfectly in any retail Sega Genesis system. This is a bare PCB that features several dipswitches on it but after much experimentation I have not seen any direct effects on the gameplay while using them. Please note like all the known Sonic Crackers carts (as well as the ROM) when the game is started you will need to press the start button on the controller before the controller before the SEGA logo fills the screen. Otherwise the game will lock up and will need to be reset.

This is my first auction on Chase the Chuckwagon but I have been selling on Ebay for a number of years under the user ID darkmider. I also am a member of the Gamesniped forum where I go by Evildeadman. I am a Powerseller with a perfect 100% feedback rating. Below is a link to my Ebay feedback page. Thanks for looking and I look forward to listing more great proto games here on the site!

I've played the rom, which no doubt has variations. Essentially the game has Sonic and Tails joined together by a band of rings. Later this formed the basic idea for Knuckles' Chaotix on the Sega 32X. The levels wen' complete, but they were interesting.

Great item for a Sega or Sonic fan and the price isn't unreasonable either.

$600.00 BIN on CTCW

I’ve never heard of variations to this game. I’m somehow doubting there’s any carts of anything other than what’s dumped.

    Could be true,
I have escape from atlantis (unreleased nes game)
and it has some graphic and control difference from the dumped version, you have to remember that these games where in progress and can change quickly.

$600 for Sonic Crackers? Is someone on crack?

Sonic Crackers is probably one of the most common Gen/MD protos out there, with most of them ‘made’ by people working in the 3rd party duplication department at Sega in the 90’s. Although they are real protos in the sense that they are on authentic proto boards they are also a bit fake in that they were never used for either prototyping nor evaluation.

Hint: if you want a SC proto as authentic as this one then you are better off buying some unused MD proto boards and an EPROM burner.
